As of October 1st 2020 consumers with solar panels, known as “prosumers”, are asked to make a contribution to the costs of using the electricity distribution network. In an effort to soften the blow, the Walloon government has proposed to pay 100% of this tax until the end of 2021, and 54% up to the end of 2023. The Niko Home Control starter kit energy is a plug-and-play package that provides you with detailed insights into your electricity and gas consumption, as well as the production and consumption of energy from your solar panels. Thanks to the smart plugs’ solar mode function, you’ll be able to use more of your own home-produced solar energy.
The starter kit
The package includes
- a wireless smart hub
- 3 smart plugs
- a P1 cable to connect the wireless smart hub to the digital meter.
When installed, you’ll be able to monitor the energy use of your appliances and switch them on or off from a distance with the Niko Home app.
To have insights in your total energy use, you can connect the wireless smart hub to your digital meter. If you have solar panels, you’ll want to connect your installation to your SMA Sunny Boy or Sunny Tripower* to have an overview of your self-produced solar energy and self-consumption.

The Niko Home app — which you’ll find in the app stores — can give you insights into the gas and electricity consumption of your home and your individual appliances. In this way, you’ll have up-to-date and real-time information about your consumption in the past hour, days, weeks, months or years.

Consume more home-generated energy
Now that the reverse electricity counter has been stopped, it’s even more important to use as much of your home-generated solar energy as possible. With a Niko smart home system, you’ll receive smart energy alerts when you are injecting energy into the grid.
If you are at home, you can use this solar energy to power your appliances, and if you are away, you can trust your smart plugs’ solar mode to automatically switch on when energy is freely available.
